Former Algerian Minister Cherif Rahmani joins IPEMED PSC

Published : Monday 10 October 2016

IPEMED is happy to welcome former Algerian Minister Cherif Rahmani among the members of its Political Steering Committee (PSC). An ambassador of Terres Arides to the United Nations and the President of the Fondation des Deserts du Monde, Cherif Rahmani has been a Minister several times in Algeria.

Cherif Rahmani works actively to improve environmental law in Algeria.  Under his direction, new specialised institutions were created in order to design and implement an environmental policy in a sustainable development objective.

He also supervised the implementation of economic and financial instruments aiming to establish an ecological tax in compliance with international standards following the polluter pays principle in Algeria. He contributed to the implementation of the PNAE-DD (National Action Plan for the Environment and Sustainable Development).

Thanks to its extensive experience, the former Minister will help IPEMED to understand better the sustainable development issues in the Mediterranean region.

On 26 September 2016, when he came to Paris for a strategic meeting organised by Ipemed, Cherif Rahmani agreed to give us his opinion, in a short video, on the main environmental challenges facing both Algeria and the Mediterranean region.

According to Cherif Rahmani, climate change will first affect the South of the Mediterranean.
