Professor Jean-Louis Rastoin, member of IPEMED’s Scientific Committee, took part in the 1st International Congress on Sustainable Life in Ankara, Turkey, on 16 March 2019.

He spoke on the second day of this event, during the 7th session on sustainable practices, with a presentation about “Territorialised Food Systems (TFS): Contributing to the Sustainable Development of Rural and Urban Areas”. This presentation was an opportunity to highlight that today, food systems are faced with the three same challenges that align with those of Sustainable Development Goals (population and governance, degradation of natural resources and climate change, and economic balance).

To conclude, J.-L. Rastoin highlighted four essential factors for TFS development:

1) Rehabilitation of property regimes in each region of the world by adapting them to the current context thanks to technological innovation.

2) Social and solidarity economy as a principle of business governance.

3) Development of territorial food policies with efficient public institutions that are open and well-coordinated at the local, national and international levels.

4) In a context of frequent market failures, inclusion of ethical criteria in the organisation and operation of the entire food system.
